NTT DoCoMo, Japan's biggest mobile carrier by market share, yesterday reported its worst January subscriber figures after losing thousands of customers to KDDI. Masao Nakamura, DoCoMo's chief executive, responded to the data by telling the Financial Times: “It is difficult to find a weakness right now” in its competitor. But Mr Nakamura insisted that his company would soon be able to stem the customer defections with a range of new products, including mobile handsets equipped with television access, to be launched in time for the important spring season. DoCoMo gained only 7,000 customers on a net basis last month – the worst January since it was launched, according to a company spokesman. The monthly numbers follow other disappointing figures, including an outright net loss in November – the first for any month since DoCoMo started. The culprit behind these figures is number portability – a system introduced in October that allows customers to change carrier without changing their phone number. This has increased the rate of defections between carriers. DoCoMo lost almost 100,000 subscribers to other carriers last month. |
