TOKYO (AFP) - A top Tokyo university on Monday suspended classes amid concerns over a growing outbreak of the measles, a highly contagious and potentially fatal disease.
Waseda University, one of Japan's most prestigious institutions, dismissed class for nine days and banned entry to its campuses, affecting about 55,000 students.
The university reportedly confirmed 30 students had contracted the disease by Monday.

Cancellation of lectures due to measles outbreak
As of May 21 2007 (11AM), 30 students have been confirmed to be infected by measles. As a result, all lectures/ classes will be cancelled for the following period.

MAY 21(Mon.) 4th PERIOD ONWARDS to MAY 29(Tue.) WHOLE DAY
NOTES
* All campus are out of bound, excluding Kita-Kyushu, Honjo Senior High School, Senior High School(Kamishakuji).

今年入春以来日本相继有数所大学因麻疹疫情而被迫停课，但规模均不及本次。在停课期间，校方不仅禁止学生使用校内设施，还对社团活动悉数叫停。但考虑到棒球等体育类社团即将出赛，校方正在研究让相关队员在接受检查后继续开展训练。
